Electrical engineering

Referent: Zich Riccardo

The research activity of the Electrical Engineering group is focused both on the study of the impact of ICT on advanced power systems and on the analysis of these systems themselves.
The research covers a broad range of topics: from the study and development of advanced analytical and numerical techniques, applied to the design of satellite communication systems, to the use of evolutionary optimization algorithms for applications in high frequency unconventional antenna system. Further research activity is devoted to model and synthesise of engineering systems and devices, the study of technologies for monitoring energy production and distribution systems, with a particular attention to renewable sources.
The research activity of this group deals with the development of mathematical models for the study of complex physical phenomena (related to conduction, radiation and propagation) and the analysis of the dynamics of electro-mechanical systems. Moreover, the study of effects of electromagnetic fields is carried on, in both low and high frequency, taking into account the phenomena of electromagnetic pollution resulting from conducted and radiated disturbances, which may impact on the quality of the electricity itself.
In particular, for what concerns the energetic aspects of electricity, the research is oriented to the development of innovative solutions for LED lighting systems and other components that characterize a photovoltaic system (modules, inverters, trackers sun, network structure, etc ...) suitable for working with high performance in different configurations and load conditions.
Moreover, soft computing techniques and forecasting systems are studied, for the integration of meteorological data with sensor measurements on the ground, in order to forecast energy production from renewable sources, with particular attention to photovoltaic systems.
