Optimisation of large-scale infrastructures for carbon dioxide capture, transport, and geological storage
Up to 2 MSc Dissertation posts are available for year 2022/2023 in the context of the techno-economic modelling and high-level optimisation of large-scale infrastructures for carbon dioxide capture, transport, and geological storage.
All Theses will involve a preparatory qualitative analysis (literature review) on carbon capture, transport, and storage chains at the various echelons of such complex systems in terms of: carbon capture technologies from industrial sources (with a focus on Mediterranean and Southern European CO2 emissions), transport options (in particular, ship- and pipe-based transport), CO2 collection hubs, and geological storage sequestration basins. This literature review will be based on published scientific articles on the topic alongside MSc Theses developed by scholars from previous cohorts. A second stage of the analysis will encompass the economic optimisation of these multi-stage systems in a relevant geographic setting, by means of a tailored software for algebraic combinatorial optimisation. The final aim will be the economic optimisation of the full CO2 chain to assess the dynamic evolution of the transport infrastructure, to understand the competitiveness of different transport links on a meaningful time scale.
