Building physics laboratory

Experimental activity focuses on thermal characterization of building components and materials, in order to derive energy performances, and on the measurement of thermal comfort and air quality in indoor environments.
Concerning building materials and components the following activities are present:

  • measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity by means of dynamic technique (Transient Plane Source);
  • characterization of porous walls behavior in steady and dynamic conditions, by means of Dual Air Vented Thermal Box;
  • measurement of the thermal resistance of innovative building components, through dual thermal box and heat flow meter method.

Concerning monitoring in indoor environments, mobile data loggers are available allowing to measure thermal comfort parameters (operative temperature, air temperature and humidity, air velocity etc..) and air quality parameters (TVOCs, CO2, CO, NO2, SO2, O3, particulate– PM 10-2.5, formaldehyde - HCHO).Moreover a “SandBox” apparatus is available, reproducing saturated soils with groundwater flow at a reduced scale under controlled conditions, for the study of ground heat exchangers performance.Location:Politecnico di Milano - Department of Energy - campus Bovisavia Lambruschini, 4 (building BL25)20156 Milano
