Laboratory of Combustion and Optical Diagnostics

The Laboratory of Combustion and Optical Diagnostics studies the thermo-fluid-dynamic processes relevant to industrial systems and propulsion (terrestrial and aerospace) systems. Focus is given to topics related to fluid dynamics, combustion and sprays. The Laboratory has test rooms and instrumentation suitable for the investigation of flames, premixed and non-premixed burners (up 100 kW, hydrogen or NG fueled), miniaturized combustion systems and industrial/engine sprays. Measurements on sprays and the investigation of their formation processes can be carried out both at low- and high pressure/temperature. The Laboratory studies and develops measurement techniques based on laser/LED systems and optical sensors for the evaluation of both scalar and vector fluid-dynamics quantities. The available instrumentation includes CCD and CMOS high-speed cameras, gas analyzer for pollutant emissions, and systems to characterize the flow field, such as Stereo-PIV, LDV and PDA.
