High LET Radiations Dosimetry laboratory

The lab is equipped with a nuclear track detector reader, called Politrack, developed in collaboration with an external company (Mi.Am. SrL). The lab's research focuses on personal and environmental passive neutron dosimetry and radon measurement in the air. The laboratory provides a self-financing through the royalties received by Mi.Am. which markets the Politrack. The instrument is distributed all over the world and in Italy it is becoming the standard for the passive measurement of Radon. Neutron measurements are made also using an active instrument called LUPIN, developed by the laboratory in collaboration with ElseNuclear, and designed for pulsed neutron fields. The royalties deriving from the distribution of LUPIN contribute to self-financing the Lab.

Since March 2021 the laboratory has developed with the support of Arktis Radiation Detectors and Else Nuclear a cosmic neutron spectrometer called W-PIE, which is used to measure soil moisture and rainfall levels in an area of several hectares, to support of agricultural activities and precision irrigation. In this context, the laboratory participates in the European Metrology Program for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) in the "Metrology for multi-scale monitoring of soil moisture" project.
