Internal Combustion Engines

The Internal Combustion Engines Laboratory is dedicated to CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) modeling of thermo-fluid dynamic processes in engines, taking into consideration all their characteristic aspects: unsteady flows in the intake and exhaust systems, formation of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder; spark-ignited and Diesel combustion, and innovative combustion methods (HCCI, dual fuel); estimates of pollutant emissions; turbo-supercharging, post-treatment systems of exhaust gases; alternative fuels (bio-fuels, natural gas, hydrogen). Advanced CFD models based on open-source codes are developed in the laboratory, for the study and design of new generation, low-consumption and low-emissions engines powered by traditional- and bio- fuels. The laboratory research is well integrated in the international scene thanks to the numerous existing collaborations with European universities and sector companies. Computational resources include an HPC cluster with 620 CPUs and a remote visualization node.
