Seminar at the Department of Energy: “Communicating Like an Engineer” with Debjani Sarkar

On 6 March, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano hosted the seminar “Communicating Like an Engineer: Effective Technical Writing in Practice”, delivered by Professor Debjani Sarkar from Michigan State University (USA). The event, addressed to students and PhD candidates, focused on a core aspect of engineering education: technical writing as a strategic competence for research, industry, and technology transfer. During the interactive session, Professor Sarkar examined the key attributes of effective technical communication — clarity, precision, argumentative structure, and audience awareness — providing practical guidance to enhance the quality of professional documents. Particular attention was devoted to persuasive writing, illustrated through the example of the cover letter as a versatile technical document with significant strategic value. She also explored the principles of expository writing, outlining the structure and content organization of a technical or laboratory report, with emphasis on logical coherence, evidence management, and synthesis of results. The final part of the seminar was dedicated to direct discussion with participants: students and researchers had the opportunity to present concrete cases and specific challenges related to drafting scientific articles, technical reports, and project documentation. The seminar represented an important cross-disciplinary training opportunity, strengthening communication skills as a defining element of the contemporary engineer’s professional profile.

Debjani Sarkar, Academic Teaching Specialist at the College of Engineering of Michigan State University (USA), teaches Technical Communication for Engineers and Scientists, with a specific focus on technical writing. Her teaching is aimed at equipping engineering researchers and students with the tools to lead, communicate, and innovate in a complex global environment through clear, compelling, and effective communication skills.
