Enrico Zio Keynote at AI STAR 2025 of the European Space Agency
Prof. Enrico Zio, a faculty member of the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, was a keynote speaker at AI STAR 2025, the artificial intelligence symposium organized by the European Space Agency (ESA) from December 3 to 5, 2025, at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany.
During his talk, titled “AI for Maintenance”, Prof. Zio explained how advanced artificial intelligence approaches can transform the management, monitoring, and sustainability of complex engineering systems. His participation highlighted the expertise of the Laboratory of Analysis of Systems for the Assessment of Reliability, Risk, and Resilience (LASAR³) in developing cutting-edge AI methodologies to enhance the reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety of industrial systems.
The AI STAR Symposium – Artificial Intelligence Symposium on Theory, Application, and Research is the ESA’s flagship event dedicated to artificial intelligence. Now in its third edition, the 2025 symposium took place over three days, offering extensive opportunities for learning, networking, and innovation.
The symposium brings together prominent figures from industry, academia, policy, and research to discuss the transformative potential of AI in the space sector and beyond. In previous editions, speakers included representatives from leading AI companies such as Cohere, AWS, IBM, and Nvidia, as well as key figures in the application of AI to engineering, including Airbus, Merck, and J.P. Morgan, creating a dynamic, high-level forum for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
