The Department of Energy contributes to the LiveGrid project for the flexibility of Trieste’s electricity grid

Maurizio Delfanti and Davide Falabretti took part in the presentation of the pilot project in Trieste, promoted by AcegasApsAmga and developed with scientific consultancy from Politecnico di Milano.

On 9 September 2026, LiveGrid, the pilot project dedicated to local flexibility services for Trieste’s electricity grid, was presented at the AcegasApsAmga Training Center. The event was attended by Maurizio Delfanti and Davide Falabretti, professors at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, who contributed to the project’s development from both a technical and regulatory perspective through their scientific consultancy.

LiveGrid represents a further step in the evolution of Trieste’s Smart Grid. Following the strengthening and digitalization of the electricity infrastructure, the initiative aims to test a more flexible approach to grid management, capable of leveraging the ability of companies, generation plants, and energy storage systems to adjust consumption and production according to the needs of the electricity system.

During the workshop, Delfanti and Falabretti discussed the opportunities associated with the use of flexibility to accelerate the energy transition, focusing in this context on the role of renewable energy sources and new actors in the electricity system. Their contribution brought Politecnico di Milano’s scientific perspective on the evolution of distribution grids into the discussion with operators and stakeholders.

In a system characterized by the growing penetration of distributed generation and the electrification of consumption, flexibility is becoming increasingly important. Through Balancing Service Providers (BSPs), resources such as energy storage systems, generation plants, electric vehicles, and flexible loads — including the cold ironing system at the Port of Trieste — can temporarily adjust their exchanges with the grid, contributing to more efficient and secure system management.

The LiveGrid project, promoted by AcegasApsAmga, uses the technological infrastructure developed by areti and the platform of the Local Flexibility Market operated by Gestore dei Mercati Energetici (GME). The launch of the pilot project, currently undergoing public consultation in accordance with ARERA regulations, is scheduled for November this year.
