POLIMI European Patent Litigation Certificate 2026
Politecnico di Milano among the five universities accredited for training future European Patent Litigators.
On 21 May, the 2026 edition of the POLIMI European Patent Litigation Certificate course successfully concluded. The programme was organised by the Department of Energy of the University Politecnico di Milano under the direction of Prof. Antonio Salerno (Department of Energy, Politecnico di Milano & UPC Representative) and Lawyer Giovanni Casucci (Partner, Grimaldi Alliance).
The training programme was designed to prepare graduates in technical and scientific disciplines, already qualified as European Patent Attorneys, to obtain the additional qualification of UPC Representative. This qualification enables them to represent their clients before the Unified Patent Court (UPC) independently, even without the assistance of a lawyer.
The Unitary Patent — a single title providing protection in 18 EU Member States — and the Unified Patent Court, which has jurisdiction over validity and infringement matters, have been operational for three years and represent a significant step forward for European integration and competitiveness.
The six‑month course involved 62 European Patent Attorneys from across Europe and concluded with three days of in‑person practical exercises at the Department of Energy, followed by the final examination required to obtain the qualification.
Many participants expressed strong appreciation for the programme, describing it as comprehensive, stimulating, and meaningful — an experience that will have a lasting impact on their professional careers.
