Politecnico di Milano participates in the Clean Aviation European project HYPERWIN

Project dedicated to enabling electric motor technologies for future zero-emission liquid-hydrogen-powered aviation

The Department of Energy leads the work package on the magneto-electro-thermal design of High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) coils and the preliminary assessment of HTS full-winding concepts for propulsion motors in the 2 MW class

The Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano is a partner in the European project HYPERWIN – HYdrogen-powered suPErconducting motoR Windings for zero-emission aIrcraft propulsioN, funded under the European Union’s Clean Aviation fast-track programme dedicated to the demonstration of efficient and reliable AC superconducting windings for future aircraft propulsion motors in the 2 MW class.

The ultimate goal of HYPERWIN is to advance high-temperature superconducting AC winding technology from existing TRL3/TRL4 building blocks to TRL5 validation within the project, in a representative 2 MW-class hydrogen-electric propulsion motor environment. The ambition is to deliver a safe, scalable, and manufacturable AC HTS stator winding technology package supported by validated design, manufacturing, and test evidence.

Within HYPERWIN, Politecnico di Milano is represented by the Department of Energy, which brings to the project its research expertise in cryogenically cooled electrical machines, with particular focus on electrical losses and thermal stability. The Department is responsible for the design of the cryogenic cooling architecture and the electro-thermal analysis of the HTS coil concepts, and for the preliminary modelling of the full-winding demonstrator test-rig.

"Throughout HYPERWIN, our Converters, Electrical Machines and Drives research group will apply its expertise in the electro-thermal modelling of cryogenically cooled machines to a major industrial and environmental challenge. From the design and optimisation of HTS winding concepts to training and capacity-building activities, our work will reflect the commitment of the Department of Energy to a more sustainable aviation sector in Europe."
