The Department of Energy at the 2025 International Engineering Festival

The fifth edition is scheduled for 19-21 September and will involve both the Bovisa and Leonardo campuses in Milan.

The Department of Energy will actively participate in the International Engineering Festival, scheduled from 19 to 21 September, with educational lectures, open workshops and activities for children.

Below are details of the initiatives organised by the Department:

Informative lectures

➜ “Inside the engine! A journey through pistons, sounds and mechanical magic” (children aged 6 to 12) curated by Augusto Della Torre
Saturday 20 September at 10:00 am | B12, classroom L.0.6 – Bovisa Campus
An interactive experience designed for children to discover what’s inside an engine! Between moving pistons, opening valves and roaring sounds, children will be able to see up close how the “heart” of cars, planes and ships really works. They will be able to touch real parts, watch live demonstrations and discover, through play, the secrets of one of humanity’s most fascinating inventions. A unique opportunity to spark curiosity… and perhaps even ignite a passion!

In the context of global energy challenges, this talk offers a dialogue between experts from academia, institutions and industry to analyse the current role and future prospects of nuclear energy, with a focus on technological innovation, safety and social acceptability. An opportunity to explore the potential contribution of nuclear energy to a low-emission future. Speakers:

  • Andrea Borio di Tigliole: Coordinator of programme activities at the Department of Nuclear Energy of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna.

➜ “Future energies: true stories of those who are already building them” curated by Emanuela Colombo
Saturday, 20 September at 3:00 p.m. | B12, classroom L.1.3 – Bovisa Campus
What happens after a PhD in energy? You can start a start-up, lead an international team, continue doing research or manage energy for a large company. In this meeting, three former PhD students from Politecnico di Milano recount their journey: their choices, challenges and twists and turns. A live debate to discover how a passion for science can become a business, an adventure or a mission, and to imagine together the professions of the future. For those who dream of changing the world with energy – and want to know how to do it, really.
Emanuela Colombo will be in conversation with Susanna Ciminà (ARS TECH), Nicolò Golinucci (eNextGen) and Alfredo Nespoli (Atlante).
