Combustion and Optical Diagnostics Laboratory

Focuses on research into thermofluid dynamic processes in industrial and propulsion systems. Equipped with advanced tools, it studies flames, burners and sprays through optical measurement techniques, allowing the assessment of fluid dynamic and scalar quantities.

The Combustion and Optical Diagnostics Laboratory studies thermofluid dynamic processes in industrial systems and terrestrial/aerospace propulsion. The lab is equipped to study flames, both non-premixed and premixed burners (fuelled with natural gas and/or hydrogen, up to 100 kW thermal power), miniaturised combustion chambers and sprays typical of industrial and automotive applications.

The characterisation of sprays and related formation processes can also be conducted at high pressure and high temperature. The Laboratory studies and develops measurement techniques based on the use of lasers/LEDs and optical sensors to evaluate vectorial (velocity) and scalar (concentration, density, temperature, etc.) fluid dynamic quantities.

Instrumentation
  • high-speed CCD and CMOS cameras,
  • a pollutant emission analysis system
  • systems for evaluating the motion field such as Stereo-PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry),
  • LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry)
  • PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometry).
