Best Paper Award for the Turbomachinery Research Group of the Department of Energy at ASME Turbo Expo 2025
Prof. Paolo Gaetani and Prof. Giacomo Persico from the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, together with Andrea Notaristefano (our alumnus), received the Best Paper Award from the Turbomachinery Committee of the ASME International Gas Turbine Institute at Turbo Expo 2025, held in Memphis, USA, in August 2025.
The award was given for the paper “Turbulence Measurements in Axial Turbines Using Fast Response Aerodynamic Pressure Probes”, first presented at ASME Turbo Expo 2024 in London and subsequently published in the Journal of Turbomachinery.
The study introduces an innovative data acquisition and reduction method that allows fast-response aerodynamic pressure probes (FRAPP) to be used more effectively for characterizing turbulence in flows within turbomachinery. After validation in a wind tunnel, the methodology was applied to a single-stage axial turbine, demonstrating the robustness and reliability of FRAPP even in complex flow conditions, where the use of hot-wire anemometers would be prohibitive.
“This recognition rewards years of experimental research dedicated to developing increasingly advanced tools to understand the complex phenomena governing turbomachinery aerodynamics”
says Prof. Giacomo Persico
“Our work shows how the evolution of measurement techniques can open new perspectives in the study of internal flows in turbomachinery, with tangible impacts on the design of more efficient machines”
adds Prof. Paolo Gaetani
