Department of Energy hosts the annual meeting of the european MARPOWER project

On 23–24 September 2025, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano hosted the General Assembly of the European MARPOWER project at the EN:lab building on the Bovisa Campus. The project is funded under Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101138341).

Dedicated to the decarbonization of maritime transport, MARPOWER aims to develop an energy conversion system based on gas turbines capable of operating with zero-carbon-emission fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and green methane. The project’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution in port areas, while also contributing to the protection of coastal ecosystems.

The meeting brought together consortium partners and Advisory Board members, the latter joining remotely. During the two-day event, the progress of the various Work Packages and the project’s future outlook were presented.

The meeting concluded with a visit to the LFM – Machine Fluid Dinamics Laboratory – at the Department of Energy.

At Politecnico di Milano, actively involved in the project, Professors Giacomo Persico, Alessandro Romei, and Andrea Spinelli, along with PhD student Giuseppe Messina, are contributing. The Politecnico team focuses on the development of the system’s turbomachinery, with particular attention to innovative turbo-expanders designed to ensure optimal performance and operability at high temperatures for all the different fuels considered in the study, thus guaranteeing maximum fuel flexibility. This result will be achieved through an innovative shape optimization technique developed specifically for the project.
