Master’s Degree in Nuclear Safeguards: the third edition organised as part of the European SENSSEtt project is underway
An excellent programme for training professionals in the field of nuclear safeguards
The safe use of nuclear energy requires strict compliance with safety standards and constant monitoring of nuclear material. To ensure compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the commitments made by States, it is essential to implement a safeguards system involving both national regulatory authorities and nuclear plant operators.
The Level I Master’s Degree in Nuclear Safeguards was created to meet these needs, offering a course aimed at training professionals in the field of nuclear safeguards.
Organised by the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network) l’European Joint Research Centre (JRC), academic institutions that are part of the ENEN network, ESARDA (Enhancing R&D in Nuclear Safeguards) partners and other international organisations (e.g. IAEA), the Master’s programme is now in its third edition, starting in November 2025.
This edition presents an important new feature: the Master’s programme is being implemented as part of the European project SENSSEtt (Strengthening European Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Education training and tutoring). SENSSEtt is a European initiative dedicated to promoting capacity building in nuclear safety and safeguards management. Co-funded by the European Union under the EU-INSC instrument and running from 2024 to 2029, this project brings together three European institutions – SKEMA Business School, Université Côte d’Azur and Politecnico di Milano – to promote academic excellence and the sharing of expertise.
In this context, the Master’s Degree in Nuclear Safeguards aims to provide participants with the skills to improve the effectiveness of nuclear safeguards implementation, in support of national security and compliance with international regulations.
Applications are open until 14 September to professionals and civil servants from national bodies, public organisations, research and development centres and industries, who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics and Natural Sciences, Law, Economics or Political Science. The Master’s programme is fully funded for non-EU participants from countries included in the INSC (Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation) list. For European participants, Politecnico di Milano offers partial reductions on the enrolment fee.
The Master’s programme is structured as a cross-disciplinary training course, covering topics ranging from political science to forensic science and nuclear technology, and lasts 15 months. The programme is organised in a blended format, including lectures and online seminars, practical exercises and face-to-face workshops, with the involvement of a multidisciplinary teaching staff from both academia and industry.
