Presentation of the Level II Master’s Degree in “Innovation in Electrical Energy Systems” promoted by Terna
The first initiative of Politech Lab, the new Polytechnic Network of High Competence
On Tuesday, 1 July, the presentation event was held for the first edition of the Level II Master’s Degree in “Innovation in Electrical Energy Systems”, funded by Terna S.p.A. and organised by the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano together with Politecnico di Torino e Politecnico di Bari. The Master’s Degree was created as part of PoliTech Lab, the new Polytechnic Network of High Competence promoted by Terna in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino, Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Bari, with the aim of promoting innovation, research and higher education for the benefit of the electrical system.
During the event, which was attended by more than 150 students in person and online, the programme’s educational offering, content, objectives and teaching organisation were presented.
Speakers included: Prof. Isabella Nova, Vice-Rector, Politecnico di Milano; Prof. Giovanni Lozza, Director of the Department of Energy, Politecnico di Milano; Daniele Amati, Director of Human Resources, Terna; Prof. Maurizio Delfanti, Director of the Master’s programme, Politecnico di Milano; Emanuela Domenica Luppino, Head of Terna Academy, Terna and Simona Sapio, Head of Recruiting, Terna.
Prof. Maurizio Delfanti explained the reasons behind the design of the training programme and its educational content.
The development of electricity grids and their safe and efficient management increasingly require interdisciplinary skills: this is the key to successfully tackling the energy transition and building the future of electricity systems. With this in mind, we worked together to define the content of this Master's degree programme, the result of collaboration between Terna and the three Italian polytechnic universities. At the end of the course, participants will obtain a Master's degree jointly awarded by Politecnico di Milano, Bari and Torino. This is a unique project in Italy: it is the first time that a strategically important organisation such as Terna has entered into this type of collaboration with the Italian Polytechnic system as a whole.
Prof. Maurizio Delfanti, Master Director
The Master’s programme is designed to prepare professionals who will play a key role in the design and management of the National Electricity Grid in the coming decades. The programme aims to train highly specialised professionals in areas such as plants and technologies, asset management, electrical power systems, energy markets and regulation.
Applications are open until 12 September to students with a master’s degree in Automation, Electrical, Electronic, Energy and Nuclear Engineering, Management, Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering. The Master’s programme will begin in November 2025, will last one year and will require a total commitment of 1,500 hours, corresponding to 60 university credits (CFU). A total of 45 candidates will be selected by Terna Spa and will be awarded scholarships by Terna. For the teaching programme, each university will be assigned 15 candidates.
The teaching programme includes lectures, practical exercises, workshops, seminars, visits to plants and a final internship in a company, with the involvement of a multidisciplinary teaching staff from both the academic and industrial worlds. The activities will be held at the three polytechnic universities (Milano, Torin and Bari) and at the Terna Academy Campus in Rome.
