Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards: the third edition organized as part of the European SENSSEtt project is underway
An excellent programme for training professionals in the field of nuclear safeguards
The safe use of nuclear energy requires strict compliance with safety standards and constant monitoring of nuclear material. To ensure compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the commitments made by States, it is essential to implement a safeguards system involving both national regulatory authorities and nuclear plant operators.
The I Level Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards was designed to meet these needs, offering a course aimed at training professionals in the field of nuclear safeguards.
Organized by the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network) l’European Joint Research Centre (JRC), Academic institution participating in the European Nuclear Education Network, ESARDA (Enhancing R&D in Nuclear Safeguards) partners and other international organizations (e.g. IAEA), the Specializing Master is now in its third edition, starting in November 2025.
This edition presents an important new feature: the training programme is being implemented as part of the European project SENSSEtt (Strengthening European Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Education training and tutoring). SENSSEtt is a European initiative committed to foster capacity building in Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Management. Co-funded by the European Union under the EU-INSC instrument and running from 2024 to 2029, this project brings together three European institutions – SKEMA Business School, Université Côte d’Azur and Politecnico di Milano – in order to to promote academic excellence.
In this context, the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards aims to provide participants with the skills to improve the effectiveness of nuclear safeguards implementation, in support of national security and compliance with international regulations.
Applications are open until 14 September to professionals from national bodies, public organisations, research and development centres and industries, who hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics and Natural Sciences, Law, Economics or Political Science. The Specializing Master is fully funded for non-EU participants from countries included in the INSC (Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation) list. For European participants, Politecnico di Milano offers partial reductions on the enrolment fee.
The programme is structured as a cross-divisional training path, involving political science-forensics-nuclear scientific and technological areas. and it lasts 15 months. The program is structured in a blended format, including online lectures and seminars, and in presence laboratories and practical exercises, involving a multidisciplinary faculty from both academia and industry.
