Training and the future of nuclear energy: the experience of the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards at the FISA–EURADWASTE conference

From 12 to 16 May 2025, the 11th edition of the Euratom Conferences on Fission Reactor Systems Safety Research and Training (FISA) and on Radioactive Waste Management (EURADWASTE) took place in Warsaw. The conference, aimed at fostering collaboration for sustainable and safe nuclear solutions, was organized under the auspices of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and co-organized by SNETP (Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform), ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network), ENS (European Nuclear Society) and ENS-YGN (European Nuclear Society – Young Generation Network).

On 14 May, the Specializing Master and Continuing Education Office team participated in the “ENEN Dissemination Event on Safeguards Training and Education”, organized as part of the FISA–EURADWASTE conference.

The initiative was dedicated to presenting the outcomes of the Safeguards Training and Education (SaTE) project, funded by the European Commission and aimed at developing advanced educational programs in the field of nuclear safeguards.

As part of the project, the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards was developed and organized by the Department of Energy and ENEN, in collaboration with the European Joint Research Centre (JRC).

During the event, data from the first two editions of the Specializing Master were presented, highlighting the international composition of the students — from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East — and the diversity of their academic backgrounds, ranging from STEM fields to Political Science, Economics, and Law.

The event also included testimonial sessions from Alumni, who shared their educational experiences.

"The program allowed me to acquire fundamental technical knowledge for my career, as well as to develop teamwork skills through interaction with participants from diverse backgrounds. Moreover, the in-person lab sessions were particularly meaningful, contributing to both my personal and professional growth."

Huda Altamimi, a graduate of the second edition of the Specializing Master from the United Arab Emirates, with a background in Political Science, said.

The other comments were also very positive: there was satisfaction with a programme that allowed them to develop cross-disciplinary and interpersonal skills, offering an experience that will have a significant impact on their professional careers.
