Celebrating the First Graduates of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master HySET
The first master’s degree in Europe fully dedicated to the hydrogen value chain
On Friday, October 10th, the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master program Hydrogen Systems and Enabling Technologies (HySET) took place at the Castello del Valentino in Turin. The program is dedicated to training professionals with multidisciplinary knowledge in the hydrogen sector.
HySET is coordinated by the Department of Energy ‘Galileo Ferraris’ at Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, Eindhoven University of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
With the graduaton of the first cohort of 12 students, the double degree program concludes a journey marked by strong international exposure and cooperation between academia and industry: five leading international companies — Repsol, Safetec, Shell, Snam, and Sintef — are project partners.
With over 300 applications received, the first edition welcomed 10 international students from Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa, all of whom completed their theses abroad, either with partner companies or other leading organizations in the sector.

The event opened with remarks from Prof. Massimo Santarelli from Politecnico di Torino (program coordinator), who reviewed the key stages of the academic journey, emphasizing the commitment and growth of the students. This was followed by institutional greetings from Prof. Alberto Sapora of Politecnico di Torino (Vice-Rector for International Affairs) and a speech by Elisa Maviglia (EACEA – European Education and Culture Executive Agency), who highlighted the importance of collaboration between universities, industry, and the education system. The local coordinators – Prof. Gianluca Valenti (Politecnico di Milano), Prof. Attila Husar (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya), Prof. Thijs de Groot (Eindhoven University of Technology), and Prof. Yiliu Liu (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) – addressed a personal message to the new graduates, expressing satisfaction with their achievements. Greetings were also delivered by the industrial partners: Evren Unsal (Shell), Filippo Rizzi (Snam), Marta Bucelli (Sintef), Ranveig Niemi (Safetec), and Elena Verdú (Repsol). To conclude, Gianluca Gariani and Piera della Porta (Collège des Ingénieurs), involved in the project, reaffirmed their commitment to the program.
Applications for the fourth edition 2026-2028 are open until November 14, 2025, and available here.
The hydrogen value chain requires professionals with solid multidisciplinary knowledge—from chemical and energy engineering to mechanics, materials science, and economics—and projects like HySET can support the development of experts able to guide the energy transition
states Prof. Valenti
During the ceremony, the new graduates celebrated their achievement, sharing their satisfaction with an educational journey that combined technological innovation, international mobility, and high-level academic collaboration.
