Department of Energy at IEA workshop on skills for the future of energy
Riccardo Mereu, professor at the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, took part – by invitation – in the IEA Future of Energy Skills Workshop, held at the headquarters of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris on May 13-14, 2025.
The event involved about 40 representatives from policy institutions, energy companies, trade unions, educational institutions, international organizations and research centers from around the world, selected to contribute to the definition of global strategies on skills for the energy transition.
Organized in collaboration with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, the workshop is part of the Clean Energy Ministerial – Empowering People.
The objective of the meeting was to discuss methodological and policy challenges related to skills development and employment in the energy sector. During the two days, participants analyzed key global trends, industry needs, regional differences, and strategies for defining appropriate training pathways. The discussion also helped outline priorities for a future shared research agenda, providing input for upcoming IEA publications on the topic.
"It was an honor to participate in a workshop so rich in insights and diverse perspectives. Working together with policymakers, companies and researchers to define the skills needed for the energy transition is critical to ensuring a workforce ready to meet the challenges of the future."
