Enrico Zio among the most influential researchers according to Clarivate Analytics 2025

Prof. Enrico Zio, faculty member of the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano and professor at the Centre de recherche sur les Risques et les Crises (CRC) of Mines Paris, has been included among the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 by Clarivate Analytics, the select group representing the top 1% of the most cited researchers worldwide.

The selection, based on Web of Science data, recognizes scholars whose publications have had a significant and lasting influence in their field of research. The result confirms Prof. Zio’s international standing in scientific research on the reliability, safety, and resilience of complex systems and critical infrastructures.

Clarivate Analytics’ evaluation is also used as one of the indicators in the Shanghai Ranking of Universities (ARWU).

The recognition comes at a particularly significant moment in Prof. Zio’s career, as he has already been included in the top 0.01% of the most cited researchers worldwide according to the ScholarGPS ranking, which assesses the impact and reach of scientific output on a global scale.

An international scientific career

Prof. Zio’s academic path spans Italy, France, China, and the United States. He graduated and earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, then obtained a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a second PhD from the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Probabilistic Risk Assessment. Between 2010 and 2018, he was Professor and Chair Director at CentraleSupélec, PSL University in France, and since 2018 he has been Professor at Mines Paris – PSL, within the Centre for research on Risks and Crises (CRC), thereby contributing to the advancement of safety engineering research from a fully European perspective.

His scientific activities range from probabilistic modeling of complex systems to Monte Carlo simulation of accident scenarios, from predictive maintenance to the application of Artificial Intelligence to the safety of complex systems and to the assessment of the resilience of critical infrastructures.

A result that strengthens the Department of Energy

The inclusion of Prof. Zio among the Highly Cited Researchers represents a recognition of the work carried out by the many collaborators who have supported and continue to support him over the years, involving students, researchers, and colleagues from the Department of Energy as well as from other research centers and institutes worldwide. The scientific contribution he has brought strengthens the international standing of the Department of Energy and testifies to the quality of the research conducted in strategic fields for the safety and sustainability of energy and industrial systems.
