Multiphase Thermofluid Dynamics Laboratory

Studies heat and mass transfer phenomena in various applications, including refrigerant boiling and condensation, multiphase fluid dynamics and the analysis of droplet interactions with solid surfaces or gas/liquid interfaces.

The Multiphase Thermofluid Dynamics Lab (MultiphaseLab) focuses on experimental and numerical studies of multiphase fluid dynamics and capillary phenomena.

Research activities include:

  • Multiphase flows in industrial pipes, with applications in the oil & gas, chemical-pharmaceutical, food and energy sectors (including conventional and nuclear energy conversion plants)
  • Surfaces, interfaces and porous media, with the characterisation of innovative materials for improving heat exchange, reducing friction and developing devices (e.g. fuel cells, heat pipes, HVAC systems)
  • Phase transition heat transfer, with studies on forced boiling and convective condensation for energy efficiency in refrigeration and air conditioning.

The lab is equipped with advanced experimental setups and utilises high-speed imaging technologies, numerical fluid dynamics (CFD) and innovative measurement instruments, both for fundamental research and to support industry in process and technology design and optimisation.
