Nicolò Varallo wins the Best Paper Award from Fluids magazine
We are pleased to announce that Nicolò Varallo, PhD student in the Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology (STEN) PhD programme at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, is among the winners of the Best Paper Award 2023 awarded by the journal Fluids (MDPI).
The award-winning paper, entitled “Computational Fluid Dynamics Modelling of Two-Phase Bubble Columns: A Comprehensive Review”, was written together with Prof. Giorgio Besagni and Prof. Riccardo Mereu, and selected from among all articles published in 2023 for its originality, scientific relevance and impact in terms of citations and downloads.
The article presents a detailed analysis of numerical approaches for the simulation of two-phase bubble columns, i.e. systems in which a gas phase is injected into a liquid phase, common in various industrial applications. In particular, the study focuses on an in-depth description of all the models needed to represent the interactions between the gas and liquid phases, as well as to model the phenomena of bubble breakage and coalescence.
Nicolò is working on his PhD thesis called “DIGITAL TWINS: OPTIMISED RELIABLE MODELS TO SIMULATE COMPLEX SYSTEMS”, under the supervision of Prof. Fabio Inzoli (supervisor) and Prof. Luigi Maria Colombo (tutor).
