Studies and develops methods and techniques for measuring ionising radiation fields, with applications in spectrometry, dosimetry, and microdosimetry while providing services dedicated to the study, development and characterisation of detection systems for fast and thermal neutron fields.
The Nuclear Measurements and Electronics Laboratory (NML) is dedicated to the study, application and development of methods and techniques for measuring ionising radiation fields. Its research activities – funded by national and international projects – mainly focus on neutron, photon and charged particle spectrometry, as well as dosimetry and microdosimetry. Special emphasis is placed on the development of innovative detection systems for radioprotection and medical applications, including related acquisition systems.
The laboratory has a facility for irradiation with extensive thermal and fast neutron fields and offers radiometric characterisation services both in the laboratory and in situ. Additionally, it provides design, numerical simulation and experimental verification services for irradiation facilities undergoing commissioning and decommissioning, such as hadrotherapy centres, medical cyclotrons and industrial irradiators, as well as for advanced detection systems.

Services offered
The laboratory offers a neutron metrology service that includes fast neutron fields based on an Americium-Beryllium source (average energy flux 4.2 MeV) for calibration using the shadow cone method (ISO 8529-1:2021). It also offers thermal neutron fields for the characterisation of instrumentation and samples.
