Energy transition: Training42Phase project launched

A project fot the training of 12 PhD students in the field os two-phase flow in turbomachinery

Politecnico di Milano is participating in the Training42Phase project, an ambitious initiative funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), which aims to train a new generation of scientists specialised in two-phase flows in turbomachinery for the energy transition.

The project, coordinated by Prof. Fredrik Haglind of the Technical University of Denmark, involves several European institutes, including the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine (UK), Centrale Supélec (FR) and prominent industrial partners such as Baker Hughes – Nuovo Pignone Tecnologie, Danfoss and Exergy.

At the Politecnico di Milano, Prof. Giacomo Persico‘s team will recruit two PhD students with a specific focus on aero-thermodynamics. The PhD students will focus on research on two-phase flows in supercritical CO2 compressors, with an industrial training period at Baker Hughes – Nuovo Pignone Tecnologie, and on two-phase expanders for heat pumps, with an industrial training period at Danfoss. A third PhD student, hired by the Italian company Exergy and dedicated to the study of two-phase flows in organic fluid pumps, will be enrolled in a PhD course at the Politecnico.

The LASAR research group of the Department of Energy, led by Prof. Enrico Zio, will also support the artificial intelligence activities carried out by the PhD students of Centrale Supélec, thus contributing to the in-depth study and application of cutting-edge technologies in the energy sector.
