Sustainable methanol:Politecnico among the protagonists of the BeBOP project
The Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano is one of the partners of the BeBOP (Biomass-to-Methanol Process Optimisation Project), funded by the Horizon Europe programme with over EUR 11 million. The project aims to develop an innovative plant for the production of methanol from biomass, with the goal of increasing efficiency in carbon recovery and supporting the transition to zero-emission fuels.
The Department of Energy will contribute to the project with the experimental testing of a high-temperature electrolysis cell and the simulation of the integration between the biomass plant and the methanol synthesis plant. These activities will be key to improving the efficiency and environmental and economic sustainability of the entire process.
BeBOP represents a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of the chemical and transport industries that are difficult to electrify. Thanks to this project, we will be able to test an innovative process that maximises the utilisation of biomass and minimises CO₂ emissions, contributing concretely to the European Union’s climate neutrality goals,
says Prof. Matteo Romano of the Department of Energy, the project’s scientific coordinator.
The project involves 12 partners from 7 countries, including universities, research centres and leading companies in the sector.
