Thermo-Hydraulic Experimental and CFD Lab (TheCFD Lab @ Energy)

The CFD Lab @ Energy conducts numerical and experimental research, focusing on fluid dynamics and thermal analysis with mono-phase and multi-phase fluids in industrial, energy and nuclear fields.

The lab integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with experimental activities and the use of digital twins to develop technologies with low environmental impact and promote energy efficiency. A key goal is supporting the development of technological solutions and processes for the energy transition, contributing to the dissemination of more sustainable and innovative systems.

Research activities:

  • Mono- and multi-phase thermofluid dynamics | Modelling and experimental studies of multi-phase flows in industrial, energy and nuclear applications to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability
  • External aerodynamics in urban areas | Analysis of airflow, pollutant dispersion and ventilation strategies, integrating CFD simulations, experimental data and lumped parameter models to optimise air quality and urban comfort.
  • Validation of numerical models (CFD and lumped parameter models) through experimental analysis of components/systems | Development of hybrid approaches combining experimental data and numerical modelling to improve the accuracy of predictions and optimises real-world applications.

Using advanced CFD tools, experimental studies and data-driven modelling, the laboratory provides innovative solutions for energy systems, industrial processes and sustainable urban environments, actively contributing to the energy transition.
