Mereu Riccardo
Riccardo Mereu is Associate Professor at the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano and co-holder of the UNESCO Chair in Energy for Sustainable Development. His research focuses on the development of sustainable technologies and energy planning solutions. Initially, in collaboration with international research groups (TITech, MIT), he focused on the fundamental aspects of fluid dynamics and heat transfer, improving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for turbulence, thermal convection and multiphase transport in energy systems. Through experimental techniques and numerical modelling tools (CFD, Lumped Parameter Models), he has contributed to the development of zero CO₂ emission energy conversion technologies, including nuclear, wind and fuel cells. His research integrates detailed (CFD) and general (LPM) modelling, creating a multi-scale approach to the analysis of energy components and systems. More recently, he has expanded his focus to urban environments and distributed energy generation, applying energy system modelling to off-grid and grid-connected mini-grids for sustainable energy planning, with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa. He is also Vice President of Engineering Without Borders Milan.
Education
Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, University of Cagliari.
PhD in Energy, Politecnico di Milano.
