First Summer School under the ENCASE project kicks off

Politecnico di Milano organizes the first Summer School on thermophysical properties of fluids for energy and CO₂ capture, within the ENCASE Horizon Europe project.

The Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) accepts applications for the first edition of the Summer School ‘Thermophysical Properties of Fluids for Energy and CCS Applications: Modelling and Measurement,’ which will take place from June 23rd to June 27th, 2025, at the Piacenza Campus of POLIMI (Italy).

The event is aimed at PhD students (5 ECTS credits might be awarded under certain conditions), researchers and engineers working in the field energy, thermodynamics and process engineering. Participants can be either affiliated with universities and research centers or already engaged in a professional career and interested in deepening their understanding of thermodynamic modeling and Equations of State applied to the energy sector for decarbonization challenges.

The Summer School is promoted and organized within the framework of the Horizon Europe ENCASE project and aims to provide an overview of thermodynamic modeling aspects and measurement methods relevant for characterizing the thermophysical properties of fluids of interest in the energy sector, such as: CO₂ mixtures relevant to the CCUS chain (CO₂ Capture, Utilization, and Storage); CO₂ capture solvents; new generation refrigerants (pure fluids and mixtures); working fluids for advanced thermodynamic cycles; fluids for energy storage applications (e.g., hydrogen).

The main objectives that the school’s program aims to achieve are: presenting the theory, numerical aspects, strengths and limitations (also with the support of practical examples and exercises) of the most widely used Equations of State and thermodynamic models in scientific research and industrial applications; (ii) providing an overview of the main techniques for measuring the thermophysical properties of fluid mixtures.

"I am pleased to propose and promote this Summer School, which includes among its speakers some of the world's leading academic experts in the field. The course aims to deepen aspects related to thermodynamic modeling for calculating the thermophysical properties of fluids relevant to the energy sector, with an overview of measurement methods and standards, and with a specific focus on applications in energy and technologies such as CO₂ Capture, transport, and Storage (CCS), advanced thermodynamic cycles, and high-temperature heat pumps."

Manuele Gatti Professor of the Department of Energy (Director of the Summer School and Principal Investigator for Politecnico di Milano in the ENCASE project) states.

Further details for the registration and participation in the Summer School are available here.

Applications are available here by May 23, 2025.

The Summer School is also provided as a course of the (PhD course STEN (Scienze e Tecnologie Energetiche e Nucleari). Politecnico di Milano doctoral students can apply through the online services at www.polimi.it,, adding the teaching from the STEN Doctoral Course Manifesto to their study plan.
