Opening ceremony for the 3rd edition of the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards

The opening ceremony of the 3rd edition of the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards was held on December 19, 2025. The program is organized by the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano in collaboration with ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network) l’European Joint Research Centre (JRC), Academic institution participating in the European Nuclear Education Network, ESARDA (Enhancing R&D in Nuclear Safeguards) partners and other international organizations (e.g. IAEA).

This edition presents an important new feature: the training programme is being implemented as part of the European project SENSSEtt (Strengthening European Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Education training and tutoring). SENSSEtt is a European initiative committed to foster capacity building in Nuclear Safety and Safeguards Management. Co-funded by the European Union under the EU-INSC instrument and running from 2024 to 2029, this project brings together three European institutions – SKEMA Business SchoolUniversité Côte d’Azur and Politecnico di Milano – in order to to promote academic excellence.

In this context, the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards aims to provide participants with the skills to improve the effectiveness of nuclear safeguards implementation, in support of national security and compliance with international regulations.

 During the ceremony, the focus was on the educational content of the program, as well as on European and International Needs & Collaborations in education and training in the field of nuclear safeguards. The event concluded with a focus on the Alumni, featuring testimonials from former students of previous editions of the Specializing Master.

During the ceremony, the following speakers took part: Marco Ricotti, Professor at the Department of Energy of the Politecnico di Milano and Director of the Specializing Master; Willem Janssens, co-Director of the Specializing Master, Head of Department “Nuclear Security and Safeguards” at EU-JRC in Ispra (Italy); Kateryna Piliuhina, SATE project, Head of Nuclear Safeguards and Security Direction at ENEN; Ynte Stockmann, Head of Sector Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste Management and Nuclear Safeguards at Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) – European Commission; Jacques Repussard, President IMdR (Institut pour la Maîtrise des Risques); Ulla Engelmann, Nuclear safety & security Director at EC DG JRC; Walid M’Rad Dali, ESARDA (Enhancing Research & Development in Nuclear Safeguards) President; Quentin Michel (Professor at the University of Liège and member of the Specializing Master’s Faculty) Eros Mossini Professor at the Department of Energy of the Politecnico di Milano and member of the Specializing Master’s Faculty; Peter Volgyesi, Head of Nuclear Security Department HUN-REN Center for Energy Research; Gaspard Lyoko Mboyo (alumno I edition of the program) Huda Altamini (alumna II edition), Marzia Baldassari (alumna II edition).

On December 19, 2025, the opening ceremony of the III edition of the Specializing Master in Nuclear Safeguards took place.
