The Department of Energy has organised a course for journalists on CCUS

On Wednesday, 12 March 2025, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano organised a course entitled “Journey into CO₂ Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS): A Solution for Decarbonisation in the Industrial Sector and Beyond”. The course was dedicated to journalists interested in energy and sustainability issues.

Prof. Giovanni Lozza, Director of the Department of Energy, opened the event by welcoming the participants and emphasising the importance of collaboration between academia and the media for accurate scientific dissemination.

Sponsored by UGIS (the Union of Italian Science Journalists) and recognised by the Lombardy Order of Journalists with 3 professional training credits (CFP), the event was attended by 55 online participants from across Italy and 15 in-person attendees in the lecture hall at the Department of Energy.

The course provided an introduction to CCUS technologies, analysing their role in industrial decarbonisation and their impact in the context of European energy strategies. The main international projects underway were explored in depth, with a focus on the Department’s research in the HERCCULES  and ECCSELLENT. projects.

Speakers Matteo C. Romano and Manuele Gatti, who are both professors at the Department of Energy, together with Giovanni Caprara, a scientific columnist for Corriere della Sera and president of UGIS, guided the participants through an overview of CO₂ capture technologies and a session debunking the main myths on the subject.

This initiative forms part of a commitment to social responsibility and knowledge enhancement, contributing directly to the strategic mission of the Department of Energy and the broader involvement of the university in promoting social impact and scientific dissemination.

The Department of Energy has already organised two other courses for journalists in 2024:

  • Nuclear Energy (10 September 2024) with Andrea Pola and Marco Ricotti, moderated by Giovanni Caprara (Corriere della Sera);
  • The Energy Challenge in Africa (8 October 2024), with Emanuela Colombo and Diana Shendrikova, moderated by Zaurrini (Africa e Affari).

In the coming months, the department will continue to promote training and dialogue with the media by organising two new courses on the following topics:

  • The transport sector in the era of energy transition
  • Renewable Energy: Solutions for a Sustainable Future.
