The Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano takes centre stage at ASME Turbo Expo 2024

From 24 to 28 June, the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano actively participated in the 69th ASME Turbo Expo in London. This world-renowned conference for the gas turbine and propulsion industry had a special focus on the progress and needs to achieve the Net Zero 2050 goals.

The central theme of the event, “Achievements and Enablers Towards Net Zero in Propulsion and Power”, guided discussions on advanced technologies such as electrification and hydrogen, as well as innovative solutions beyond traditional gas turbine technologies. Plenary sessions and keynotes brought together leaders from industry, government and academia to reflect on the progress made and the adjustments needed to stay on track for a sustainable future.

The Department of Energy made a strong and active contribution by participating in and coordinating the activities of several committees (cycle innovation, energy storage, supercritical CO2, wind energy, axial flow turbine aerodynamics).

In particular:

  • Chair and coordination for 1 technical committee | Giacomo Persico (Wind Energy Committee);
  • Chair of 8 technical sessions | Marco Astolfi (4), Paolo Gaetani (2), Giacomo Persico (5);
  • Chair of 2 panel sessions | Marco Astolfi (Long-term energy storage and energy storage based on CO2 systems);
  • Panelist in 2 panel sessions | Marco Astolfi presenting activities related to the Desolination, Restore and Sehrene projects;
  • 9 oral presentations | Dario Alfani (P2P project), Ettore Morosini (Desolination project), Matteo Martinelli, Andrea Zelaschi, Noraiz Mushtaq, Agnese Firpo, Andrea Notaristefano, Otman Kouaissah (collaboration with University of Bergamo), Lorenzo Pinelli (collaboration with University of Florence);

ASME Turbo Expo 2024 hosted over 100 exhibitors and 40 poster sessions. With 2700 attendees and 1100 papers presented, it created a vibrant environment for networking and exchanging ideas, encouraging the sharing of the latest innovations and trends in gas turbines and propulsion.
