Sonia Leva among the speakers at the 2024 AMAN meeting

On 5 June, in the splendid setting of the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo, Professor Sonia Leva of the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano attended the 32nd General Assembly of AMAN, the Mediterranean Alliance of Press Agencies, at the invitation of ANSA. The meeting brought together experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities offered by renewable energy in response to the demographic, environmental and climate crises.

In her speech, Sonia Leva stressed the importance of renewable energy in decarbonisation and climate change mitigation.

Renewable energy sources play a key role in current energy scenarios and are considered to be the main element for decarbonisation and therefore a tool for limiting the temperature increase of the earth’s land and oceans,

she said. She went on to highlight the potential of photovoltaics, describing it as “very helpful because of its versatility and robustness“, and how it can be integrated into agriculture to improve the growth of certain crops and for applications such as water pumping, distribution and drinking water.

She also highlighted the potential of natural gas from renewable sources such as biomethane, biogas and green hydrogen in the decarbonisation process.

When we talk about natural gas from renewable sources, we are referring to gas that can be obtained through specific technological processes that enable the production of biomethane, biogas, green hydrogen and synthetic methane,

she explained. She also described the innovative projects of Politecnico di Milano’s Department of Energy, such as the HDH water desalination system, which uses solar radiation to produce drinking water in an efficient and sustainable way.

Finally, she stressed the importance of training journalists on energy issues, mentioning the courses organised by Politecnico di Milano for the Lombardy Order of Journalists, which cover key topics such as nuclear energy, energy challenges in Africa, renewable energy and decarbonisation.

The event also saw the participation of prominent figures such as ENEA President Gilberto Dialuce and Salvatore Capasso from the CNR, who discussed the importance of diversifying energy sources and the new technological challenges to stimulate a new “demographic spring”.
