Industrial Property: An Open Lecture on the Unitary Patent

The Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, as part of the European Patent Litigation Certificate Course, is organising an open lecture held in English by Dr. Francis Leyder on 11 February 2025, with the aim of exploring a topic of great topicality and importance in the world of intellectual property: unitary patent protection. Francis Leyder is an established Europen Patent Litigator with 30 years of experience at the European Patent Office, where he has held leadership roles. He is also vice-president of the General Assembly of the Belgian Institute of Patent Attorneys.

During the event, the focus will be on Regulations 1157/2012 (EU) and 1160/2012 (EU), which implement enhanced cooperation in the area of the creation of unitary patent protection. The applicable translation arrangements and regulations on unitary patent protection will also be covered.

  • 9.30-12.45: The birth of the unitary patent protection regulations: the concept of enhanced cooperation in the legal framework of the EU constituent treaties (TEU, TFEU); Art. 118 TFEU: ordinary legislative procedure vs. special legislative procedure;

The event will be held on campus at the Department of Energy premises in Via Lambruschini 4, Building BL25, Milan and online through the Microsoft Teams platform.
