First Summer School under the ENCASE project kicks off

At Politecnico di Milano Summer School on thermophysical properties of fluids for energy and CO₂ capture as part of the European project ENCASE

The Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano is organizing the first edition of the Summer School called “Thermophysical Properties of Fluids for Energy and CCS Applications: Modelling and Measurement ”, which will be held from June 23 to 27, 2025, at POLIMI’s Piacenza Territorial Campus.

The event is intended for Ph.D. students (with possible recognition of 5 ECTS credits), researchers and engineers working in energy, thermodynamics, process engineering and afferent to universities and research centers, or already inserted in a work path and interested in deepening aspects concerning thermodynamic modeling and equations of state to be applied in the energy field for the challenges of decarbonization.

The Summer School is sponsored and organized under the Horizon Europe ENCASE project and aims to provide an overview of aspects of thermodynamic modeling and measurement methods relevant to the characterization of thermophysical properties of fluids of interest to the energy sector, such as: CO2 mixtures of interest for the CCUS (CO2 Capture ,Utilisation and Storage) chain; solvents for CO2 capture; new generation refrigerants (pure fluids and mixtures); working fluids for advanced thermodynamic cycles; fluids for energy storage type applications (e. g. hydrogen).

The main objectives that the school’s program aims to achieve are (i) to present the theory, numerical aspects, strengths and limitations (also with the help of practical examples and exercises) of the equations of state and thermodynamic models most widely used in scientific research applications and in industry; (ii) to provide a review of the main techniques for measuring the thermophysical properties of fluid mixtures.

I am pleased to propose and promote this Summer School, which includes among its speakers some of the top international experts in the field. The course aims to delve into aspects related to thermodynamic modeling for the calculation of thermophysical properties of fluids relevant to the energy sector, with nods to measurement methods and standards, and with a specific focus on applications in the energy field and technologies such as CO₂ Capture, Transport and Storage (CCS), advanced thermodynamic cycles, and high-temperature heat pumps

Manuele Gatti of the Department of Energy (head of the Summer School and Principal Investigator of Politecnico di Milano in the ENCASE project) states.

More details for participation in the Summer School are available here.
