We are part of a university of excellence with a shared goal: to create a better world through research, education and innovation.

Our Values: The Culture of Energy

The Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, established in 2008, is a recognised technical and scientific centre of excellence known for its expertise in research and education in the energy sector. Through strategic collaborations with national and international academia and industry, it undertakes both advanced and fundamental research activities as well as innovative industrial applications, contributing to the development of technologies and strategies that address global energy challenges. Its mission is to promote scientific and technological research and the dissemination of knowledge through an integrated, multidisciplinary approach that embraces economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Structure and Governance Bodies

The Department of Energy is organised into governance bodies (Director, Council and Executive Board) and support bodies (Committees and Sections) that guide and manage scientific research, technology transfer, education and knowledge dissemination activities. The administrative structure supports and sustains these bodies, ensuring effective resource and process management.

Our History

2008

Foundation

The Department of Energy was founded through an initiative by then-Rector Giulio Ballio and Giovanni Azzone (Vice-Rector, later Rector). Faculty members from four different departments – Energy, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Chemistry, Materials, and Chemical Engineering – joined the initiative. The goal was to unify faculty, researchers and technicians from different scientific disciplines working in the broad field of energy under a single department. The Department moved into the new BL25 building in Bovisa.

2015

Inauguration of B18 Laboratories

The inauguration of 6,000 m² of laboratories dedicated to nuclear and energy-chemical research, making the Department a leader in Italy and Europe. Notable facilities include an irradiation chamber and an experimental studies chamber for hydrogen, CO2 and synthetic fuel production.

2019

Department of Excellence

The Department of Energy was awarded the prestigious ‘Department of Excellence’ recognition by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and received over €9 million in funding for five years. With the ambitious ‘Energy for Motion’ project, the Department established a new research group and laboratories focused on energy technologies for transportation.

2024

Inauguration of EN:lab

EN:lab is a laboratory building born from an innovative integrated vision of work, research and collaboration spaces, contributing to the urban regeneration of the Bovisa-Goccia-Villapizzone area. The building’s distinctive visual impact is not merely aesthetic but also serves functional purposes: experimental laboratories focused on cutting-edge research topics, spaces for knowledge sharing and dissemination, and workspaces designed with a collaborative logic.
