Seminar on Photovoltaic Systems Subinterval Phenomenon in Time-series Simulation of Photovoltaic System Performance

Time series simulation of photovoltaic system performance suffers from an inability to ascertain phenomena that occur at a time scale less than the time-step of the simulation (often 1 hour).

Such phenomena are of interest to utility grid integration and include: “clipping” by inverter capacity or capacity of the AC interconnection; any special or temporal limits on utility grid hosting capacity; and battery throughput (both charge and discharge within one hour).

Three tactics to address this problem include:
1) high resolution time series data;
2) distribution function to represent a range of values within each time-step; and
3) machine learning to infer values of these phenomena.

In this seminar, we compare all three and detail development and application of the distribution function method to solve this problem.
