Politecnico–A2A Agreement: the contribution of the Department of Energy

On April 10, 2026, Politecnico di Milano signed an eight-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with A2A, which will enable the university to cover 100% of its energy needs with electricity from certified renewable sources.

The agreement marks a significant step in the university’s energy transition pathway and is part of the actions outlined in its Strategic Sustainability Plan in the energy sector.

This result is the outcome of work developed over several years, which also involved the expertise of the Department of Energy in areas such as electricity markets, long-term contract structuring, and the integration of renewable sources.

From a technical and economic perspective, the PPA presents elements of particular interest within the national landscape: a hybrid procurement structure that combines a fixed-price component associated with a constant baseload profile and a variable-price component indexed to wholesale markets, thereby balancing cost stability and flexibility.

In terms of energy supply, approximately 35 GWh per year will be fully covered by certified renewable energy, with more than half coming from new (additional) generation capacity, directly contributing to the development of new plants in the region.

The agreement also represents an advanced application case for the public sector, introducing innovative and replicable contractual solutions for other public administrations.
