The Department of Energy hosts the 7th Programme Review Meeting of the OECD/NEA FACE project

From November 17 to 19, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano, under the coordination of Prof. Marco Pellegrini, hosted the 7th Programme Review Meeting and Management Board Meeting of the FACE project (Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident Information Collection and Evaluation) of the OECD/NEA.

The FACE Project

The FACE project brings together international institutions engaged in collecting and evaluating information related to the Fukushima Daiichi accident, with a particular focus on the analysis of damaged fuel and decommissioning processes.

Meeting Topics

During the meeting, Shinya Mizokami from Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) presented the latest updates from plant inspections and outlined the activities planned for the coming years.

Researchers from leading laboratories and nuclear organizations also participated, including CNL – Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, CEA – Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique et aux Énergies Alternatives (France), ASNR – Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire et de Radioprotection, GRS – Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (Germany), SNL – Sandia National Laboratories (USA), as well as representatives from regulatory bodies USNRC – United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, NRA – Nuclear Regulation Authority (Japan), and STUK – Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Finland), who shared the results of their most recent work supporting accident analysis and decommissioning strategies.

This edition of the Programme Review Meeting marks a significant milestone in the project’s journey, which will continue toward the next major milestone scheduled for June 2026, fifteen years after the accident.

Laboratory Visits and Side Activities

At the conclusion of the sessions, participants visited several laboratories at the Department of Energy, including those related to nuclear energy and hydrogen, as well as the Wind Tunnel at Politecnico di Milano.

In keeping with FACE meeting tradition, a morning running event was also organized at Parco Sempione, providing an informal opportunity for participants to connect and share experiences.
