Romano Matteo Carmelo
Matteo Romano, born in 1980, is a Full Professor of Energy and Environment Systems since 2021. He graduated with honors in Environmental Engineering in 2004 and obtained a PhD in Energy Engineering in 2008. His research work focuses on process engineering and techno-economic analysis of novel processes and technologies for the decarbonization of power generation and industrial processes, including cement, iron and steel, refining, paper, ceramic and glass industries as well as the production of low-carbon hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuels. This research work is intended to support both technology developers in the development of medium/low-TRL technologies as well as end-users in identfying the best decarbonization strategies for specific industrial processes. On this regard, Matteo has developed experience in the fields of CO2 capture utilization and storage (CCUS), hydrogen production, electrification and their integration in energy systems dominated by variable renewable energy sources. As of December 2023, Matteo has participated in 20 public funded projects (mainly EU collaborative projects) assigned through competitive calls and in 40 industrial research contracts. He currently teaches “Energy Conversion Technologies”, “Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization of Industrial Processes” and “Sustainable Energy in Food Industry” to MSc students in Mechanical and Food Engineering. Since 2020, Matteo is Member of the Executive Board of Alta Scuola Politecnica, the honors program for 150 selected MSc students from Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino.
