Mazzeo Domenico

Domenico Mazzeo, born in 1987, has built his scientific career around the study of the dynamic thermal behavior of materials and energy storage systems. In particular, his research has focused on phase change materials (PCMs), developing analytical and numerical models to describe sensible and latent heat storage processes as well as heat transfer under dynamic operating conditions. During his PhD, he spent a research period at the University of Lleida (Spain), where he worked on the experimental validation of models for phase change materials.

Over the years, his research has progressively expanded from theoretical modeling to include an increasing emphasis on experimental characterization and validation of heat transfer processes. His work has encompassed innovative building envelopes and thermal energy storage materials, integrated renewable energy systems, advanced photovoltaic technologies, electrical energy storage, energy communities, agrivoltaics, and the application of optimization techniques and machine learning to energy systems. Alongside these research activities, he has been actively involved in teaching, student supervision, and national and international scientific collaborations with both academic institutions and industry.

Today, his research is primarily focused on heat transfer, the experimental characterization and modeling of thermophysical properties and heat transfer processes, and the application of phase change materials for thermal energy storage and passive temperature control. His work addresses applications in photovoltaic systems, electronic devices and power electronics, batteries, data center cooling, industrial heat recovery and thermal management, and cold chain solutions, ranging from the preservation and transportation of food and pharmaceuticals to other temperature-sensitive goods. Within this framework, the activities of the ThESI Lab – Thermal Energy Storage and Innovation Laboratory, led by Domenico Mazzeo, focus on the experimental investigation of materials, prototypes, and technologies aimed at storing, managing, and reusing thermal energy more efficiently.
