Zio Enrico
Enrico Zio holds a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has two doctorates: one in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and one in Probabilistic Risk Assessment from the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He is Full Professor at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano and Full Professor at the Centre for Research on Risk and Crises (CRC) at Mines Paris – PSL University. He has held numerous international academic positions as Chair Professor, Advisory Professor, Distinguished Guest Professor, and Adjunct Professor at renowned international universities such as CentraleSupelec in France, MIT and UCLA in the USA, University of Stavanger and University of Tromso in Norway, City University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Beihang University, Harbin University, Wuhan University and others in China, and Kyung-Hee University in Korea.
His scientific research focuses on the safety, reliability, and resilience of complex systems, with applications in the energy and critical infrastructure sectors. He is one of the pioneers in the use of artificial intelligence and evolutionary algorithms in risk and reliability analysis. Author of over 700 articles in international journals and 10 books, he is consistently ranked among the Top 2% World Scientists according to Stanford and among the TOP 1% of Highly Cited Researchers according to Clarivate.
He has received prestigious international awards, including the Humboldt Research Award (2020), the title of IEEE Fellow (2023), the Alan O. Plait Award Medal (2024), the Ayyub-Wiechel Risk Analysis Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME (2025), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Reliability and Safety (2024). He is President of the Alumni Association of Politecnico di Milano and Vice-President of Fondazione Politecnico di Milano.
