HySET Winter School 2026

From February 23 to 26, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano hosted the Winter School 2026 of the Erasmus Mundus HySET Master.
The event brought together students, faculty, and industry partners for an experience focused on innovation, collaboration, and community development.
The third cohort of 14 international students participated in the second module of the Innovation Workshop on Creative Thinking, led by Gianluca Gariani.
Students presented the work they had developed on the challenges proposed by the industry partners, supported by their tutors.
Students from the second cohort acted as mentors, providing guidance and strengthening the sense of community within the program.

Artificial Intelligence and Renewable Energy Systems: Prof. Ogliari’s Talk at the Sonepar Event on the Energy Transition

On March 3 in Rimini, during the event “Renewable Energy: Perspectives and Technological Innovation” organized by Sonepar Italia in preparation for Key Energy, Prof. Emanuele Ogliari delivered a talk titled “Artificial Intelligence and Renewable Energy Systems: Optimization and Sustainability.” The presentation highlighted recent research developments on the application of Artificial Intelligence to energy systems, including nowcasting algorithms for solar radiation to enable very short-term forecasting of photovoltaic power generation, machine learning techniques for the management and optimization of electrochemical energy storage systems (BESS), and analyses of emerging trends in the electrical system. Particular attention was given to the integration of renewable energy sources and the growing impact of data centers on energy demand. The event provided an opportunity for discussion with industry operators and partners working in renewable energy and energy digitalization on issues related to power system flexibility and the use of advanced forecasting tools.

Open Workshop. Science meets Diplomacy: the role of the Universities in improving the science-diplomacy interface

On March 6, 2026, the Open Workshop “Science Meets Diplomacy: the Role of Universities in Improving the Science–Diplomacy Interface” took place at the EN:lab building of the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano. The event marked the concluding session of the doctoral course on science diplomacy. The workshop brought together academics, European institutions, and international experts to discuss the role of universities in strengthening the dialogue between science and policy in the face of global challenges, highlighting the importance of science diplomacy, scientific attachés, and cooperation between research and institutions.

Third edition of the PhD ELT Course “Evolutionary Multi-Criteria Optimisation and Decision-Making” 

Last week the third edition of the course ‘Evolutionary Multi-Criteria Optimisation and Decision-Making’ took place at the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano. The course was part of the PhD Program in Electrical Engineering and it was held by Prof. Kalyanmoy Deb, one of the leading international experts in the field of evolutionary optimisation and multi-objective decision-making, who shared his knowledge and expertise with our PhD students.

Seminar at the Department of Energy: “Communicating Like an Engineer” with Debjani Sarkar 

On March 6, the Department of Energy at Politecnico di Milano hosted the seminar “Communicating Like an Engineer: Effective Technical Writing in Practice”, delivered by Prof. Debjani Sarkar from the College of Engineering at Michigan State University. The event, aimed at students and PhD candidates, explored the role of technical writing as a key competency for research, industry, and technology transfer. During the interactive session, Prof. Sarkar discussed the core attributes of effective technical communication—clarity, precision, logical structure, and audience awareness—while providing practical guidance for improving professional documents. Particular attention was given to persuasive writing, illustrated through the example of the cover letter, and to the organization of technical or laboratory reports, focusing on logical coherence, evidence management, and result synthesis. The seminar concluded with an open discussion, where participants addressed real challenges related to scientific papers, technical reports, and project documentation.

Mario Motta at KEY 2026: Politecnico di Milano’s Contribution to MASE Initiatives for the Energy Transition

On 5 March 2026, as part of KEY – The Energy Transition Expo at the Rimini Expo Centre, the institutional event “Energy and Innovation: MASE’s International Cooperation for the Energy Transition” took place. The event was promoted by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) in collaboration with UNDP and UNEP, with scientific support provided by RSE. It offered an opportunity to discuss the main international cooperation initiatives supporting decarbonization, bringing together institutional representatives, United Nations agencies, and experts from the energy sector.

During the panel dedicated to the EPIC Deploy project, Professor Mario Motta of Politecnico di Milano presented the programme’s objectives, focused on the development and deployment of sustainable cooling technologies in high-growth countries, including Brazil, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The initiative aims to promote innovative and scalable solutions to reduce the environmental impact of cooling in the tertiary and industrial sectors.

DOMOPTI, a POLIMI spin-off, among the winners of the NEST Call4Innovation “Boosting the Energy Transition”

DOMOPTI, a spin-off of Politecnico di Milano, is among the seven startups selected in the Call4Innovation “Boosting the Energy Transition” promoted by Fondazione NEST – Network for Energy Sustainable Transition.
